Chilkoot Trail - Finnegan's Point
After a long day travel we, elected to have a short 8km warm up hike as our start of the Chilkoot trail to Finnegan's Point .
The summer in the northern American continent provides long daylight hours.
In fact we are heading for near total 'day' light as the solstice is close.
This means we can leave Skagway literally any time with a sure arrival to
our first camp. Given that we have had a long day with the bus journey,
check in and shuttle to Dyea; we elected to keep our first day's hike short
with an 8km hike to Finnegan's Point.
The walk is along a river through forest. It is a mildly undulating track
which was good to warm up our unconditioned legs. I am excited to be at last
in with nature. I am also happy to have Candace along to share the walk
with.
There is mining litter spread sporadically along the trail. It is all
protected by heritage laws so unlike the litter of today it has to stay.
There are ponds and swamp areas that have raised walking platforms. Much
easier for us than the early trampers no doubt.
The trees are a great work of art with their sinuous roots working their way
over the ground.
Our campsites are upon raised wooden platforms. Luckily I knew about this and had sufficient string to anchor the tent.
Being near water and in summer, mother nature likes to to provide food. That provision is rather undesirable from our perspective: flies and mosquitoes. I don my net for some protection (I know - I am supposed to have a hat to increase the skin to net distance). I've also elected to sprout some facial hair to provide an additional layer !
Wildflowers are ever present too providing a nice touch to the greenery of the forest.
