Sheep camp, our last night in Alaska.
"Sheep Camp is the last campground before Chilkoot Pass, making it the ideal staging area for the hike over Chilkoot Pass."
"From Sheep Camp it is 12.1 kilometers / 7.5 miles to Happy Camp; and, 16.7 kilometers / 10.4 miles to Deep Lake. Don't miss the Ranger Talk at 7:00 pm each evening. "
I thought I would simply copy the Parks Canada blurb as an introduction to provide succinct detail. I'll pinch the profile picture too - you'll see that there is a bit of an ascent, to warm us up for a real workout the next day.
The profile isn't as bad as it looks, though the camp ranger will paint
a picture to dampen the spirits of some. He gave us a good talk and
wished us all well for our journey into the Canadian side. As a note; there is
no customs control here, what you need to do is phone Canadian customs to say
you have arrived along with the Chilkoot pass number and your passport
number.
Along the way the terrain is getting steeper and the river is flowing more.
The forest is getting cooler and is covered in moss.
Waterfalls are a common occurrence.
Sheep camp is well furnished with log cabin buildings and elevated camp
sites. It is designed to support a larger group of people as it is the last
camp before the pass ascent. Some campers sneaked into the refuge cabin for an
illicit sleepover, personally I'm happier in a tent.
The stream nearby offers an opportunity for a bit of a freshen up. (and fresh
is a good description of the water temperature too !)
